Typically a byte is 8 bits. In a document, a byte will hold a letter, using the ASCII code set. For arithmetic and math, bytes might be doubled up to make WORDS or double bytes, but also set in a series to make a floating point number.
A typical drive that holds 80GB of data, that's 80 billion bytes.
If you didn't ask, you would not know. But consider using http://www.Wikipedia.org and other on-line resources to LEARN.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

Byte: A Byte is equal to 8 Bits. A Byte can represent 256 states of information, for example, numbers or a combination of numbers and letters. 1 Byte could be equal to one character. 10 Bytes could be equal to a word. 100 Bytes would equal an average sentence

A byte is a unit of data that consist of eight bits. Within the computer it is represented by a set of eight mixed postive and negative charges. Us humans usually write those bits as a series of eight 0s and 1s representing the + or - charges. (10100011). Use a byte will represent a computer command, or a letter in a document, a color on a screen, etc.
1024 bytes make up a kilobyte (kb)
1024 kb make up a megabyte (gb)
1024 gb make up a terabyte (tb)
Often people will "estimate" kb, gb and tb using 1000 instead of the actual 1024.

byte
Abbreviation for binary term, a unit of storage capable of holding a single character. On almost all modern computers, a byte is equal to 8 bits. Large amounts of memory are indicated in terms of kilobytes (1,024 bytes), megabytes (1,048,576 bytes), and gigabytes (1,073,741,824 bytes).

Computer binary data.
1 or 0 would equal one "bit" of binary data.
There are 8 bits to 1 Byte.
Then, 1000 bytes to 1 Megabyte: 1000 Megabytes to 1 Gigabyte etc (or 1024 if you want to be exact!)
