The best advice i can give you is don't attack. React.
One of the best defensive strategies is to move with the defender as they possess the ball. Use the sideline to your advantage and don't let them pass you on the outside.
When faced one-on-one. They will never beat you if you don't reach for the ball. DO NOT REACH. back pedal and let the ball come to you. learn to move laterally with efficiency and back pedal when charged upon. Experienced ball handlers will not let the ball get too far ahead of them, but it will be infront of them. as long as you keep the ball inbetween both of you, as well as the defender infront of you, you will slow down play and force them to pass. Generally one of 3 things will happen.
1) They pass
2) They hesitate and one of your teammates take it from them
3) They try to beat you one-on-one and you stuff them because you DON'T REACH, you back pedal and capitalize on their mistakes.

GOOD luck, e-mail me for tips. I use to play semi-pro, for a club team, so i know what i'm saying, would be happy to help.

Wow, what a question! Well, fitness and ball skills are not gonna change much between now and the game. But I can tell you what I did to be better- don't give your opponents much room. If there's an attacker in your half of the field, stay close to him. He won't get the ball (as much) and you won't have to run as much. Stay in his back pocket. If you're closer to him, when someone tries to pass to him, you have a better chance of getting to the ball than if you give him some space.

That's when the attack starts in their end of the field. If your team has a goal kick, keep an eye on the off-side trap. This might mean you have to give the attacker some room, but keep it minimal, OK?

Most teams do a 4-4-2 set up, so you'll have other defenders to help. If, for some reason, the other team gets more attackers than there are defenders, make sure you talk to your midfielders to drop back and help. Probably the center midfielder runs better, so he can help out. Remember to communicate.

Good luck!!

first you really have to be committed
and be in shape
endurance and speed are vital aspect to being a defender
also anticipate the moves of the forward and distract them when the ball isn't close by
