I was just wondering, because France (and maybe even Europe in general) seems to be significantly more open to sexuality in general than here in the US. Any input?

Europe is significantly less religious than the US is. While many say that they're religious on the census (in the UK for instance many many people put C of E rather than "no religion" - even if they never ever go to church)

The Financial Times in the UK did a survey which found the US is much more likely to believe in a form of God - 73%, wheras France was only 27%, even the highest country surveyed in Europe, Italy, only had 62%. I believe that religion is a major factor in tolerance of homosexuality; atheists don't really have any reason to dislike homosexuals - wheras it's written in just about every holy book that homosexuality is a sin.

In the UK gays are usually pretty well tolerated; of course there are those who hate them, but IMO there are far less than in the US.
