I am not an expert:
You will need a Sprite Can, Water bottle, Wire brush or a Battery terminal cleaner, Vaseline yes the stuff you put on a babies butt.
1.) Take the Positive off
2.) Pour Sprite on the Cable & Terminal where the corrosion is present
3.) Take the wire brush and remove the excess corrosion
4.) Rinse with water
5.) let dry or dry with paper towel
6.) Take a Globb of Vaseline and put it on top and sides of the post both Neg & Post.
7.) This will prevent corrosion from coming back

If it's the positive, the dealer will just replace the red battery cable, not a big expense. However, if the ground cable needs to be replaced, then it will be significantly more expensive. If you are talking about the actual battery terminals (on the battery), sometimes they are corroded and can be clean by simply pouring baking soda in water over them and them cleaning them off with a rag. Be sure to take the cables off before doing this.

Why does the corrosion necessitate a replacement is what you need to ask you mechanic. Or is there another reason for the replacement. ALL battery posts will eventually corrode. Remove the cables and clean the terminals and cables at the connection points. Use a di-electric (sp?) grease on the battery posts and re-assemble. The grease should come in a packet with two felt "donuts", one green, one red.

Corrosion can be cleaned, but if it is warped or otherwise damaged, it is not repairable.
