Talk to your employer about taking some continuing education classes or attending seminars, conferences, etc. It would be in their best interest if they helped pay for this type of education.

Look at joining various professional organizations focusing on your area of IS/IT (I know the subject is broad). Various professional organizations will offer certifications and education/training events.

Actually the term IS is also correct. IT is slightly different, focus on the technical side of computers. Many companies still have IS departments and they typical focus on the management and information side of the business.

However, to answer your question: Depends on what areas you want to update your skill set in.

If you want to remain current in information systems, focus and update your skills by taking out memberships in the most active groups and attending some seminars and related trade shows and find out what interests you and what the latest certifications are. Then take a class in one or more of those to obtain some newer certifications.

Regardless, keep active in the memberships and watch trade shows and technology and business management forums to see what businesses are utilizing today and keep your studies focused there. That's what I do, and I've been in systems and business analysis game for almost 20 years myself.

If you love learning, then there's a lot out there to know, if not, might want to move to start your own company and just hire the consultants that do love to learn and are up date, that way you can use your other skills and let them update! :)

Either way, enjoy!

It is now called the IT business. Go to the bookstore and buy the self study manual for the CISSP security certification. It should bring you generally up to speed.

You definitely need continuing education courses. See what your employer will pay, and check with local colleges and community colleges regarding non-credit courses in this area. The other suggestions re: CISSPP (security) are good and marketable.
