No but I was on the honor guard that flanked the president when he boarded the chopper (AF-1) to fly to Andrews to head to California...he was a beaten man

A very sad day. President Nixon was a great person and put us on an open road dialogue with China. Since the end of world war two the US had pretended that China did not exist nor did we acknowledge her. This was sheer stupidity as it is hard to ignore a thousand pound gorilla in your back yard. He opened the door to diplomatic recognition of China and visited them as President; by so doing he made the world a much safer place to exist. Look at China today and imagine what the world would be like with a nuclear power on the block and the US still pretending that they weren't there; insanity.

we all stood up and cheered and sang "Ding Dong the witch is dead" from the Wizard of Oz........
don't know if you can find it on line or in hard copy, but the very very best report on it was "Mr Nixon has Cashed his Check", Hunter Thompson in Rolling Stone.

I do, but I was only 6. It is my oldest political memory. I remember thinking "wow, this seems really important I should remember it."
