Windows Vista is the operating system; Vista makes a PC run slower compared to Windows XP on the same PC. Vista also seems to need more memory versus XP.
Dell is good, I own several Dells and they offer SOHO support (that is Small office/Home office).
Gateway talks the good talk, but I've seen too many Gateway components that failed really early (and failed severely - I know of three monitors and one system that caught fire; Dells I own have not failed).
Might I suggest NOT going along with everyone elses decision about using Windows? If you aren't using specific programs that require Windows, try Mandriva Linux and Open Office (often these are bundled together), these are available at no cost in most instances, as opposed to possibly paying between $350 up to almost a thousand dollars for the Windows equivalents (depending on how a system is bundled with whatever software). Dell offers some systems with Linux.

I am partial to HP.... Got both of mine, desk top and lap top at CompUSA but you can order through their website too.
My girlfriend bought the same through Dell. Financed through Dell. Her desk top has issues with Windows XP Service Pac 2, that upgraded her XP. It always causes her system to crash. I'm sure it has something to do with Dell's proprietary system. But she has none of the security fixes because of this.
Windows Vista is the newest operating system.
I also highly recommend you purchase service plan for your new computer, you may never need it but if you do cost can add up pretty quickly on a repair.

Dell Computers - look them up on the Internet.
I'm a professional writer (books) and my Dell is the best I ever had.
If I have a problem, Dell support is the best in the industry.
Apple used to be good but they've gone downhill.

Dells are great and you can customize them. Vista is the new windows operation system - which I would not recommend as its new and still has bugs to work out.

You can buy a new system from like best buy or compusa, but becareful because if you buy it from a place like that they generally only have trail software.
