I am heading the United Center in Chicago to watch the Flames VS Hawks this Sunday, everyone keeps telling me "good luck" I guess it can be pretty rough, is this true? any advice to stay alive?

No. The old building was rough! But this building - not at all. You would have no problems as an out of town fan, even if you were being a drunk, loud idiot.
The fans in Chicago are not the same loud crowd as years ago. The high prices did them out. It is a fine place to watch a game. It should be a decent crowd, but not a full house. Have fun.

The only arena I would be worried about is the one the Philadelphia Flyers play in. Those guys have been known to go over the glass to get at opposing players (like that incident with Tie Domi). I would fear for a fan of an opposing team, no glass to get in the way. Plus every Flyers game I have seen in Atlanta, at least one Flyers fan gets arrested.

As an Oilers fan that wore colours to the United Center and the old Stadium, you do catch flack, but will not get beat up...unless you are walking around further from the Center.

I went to a Blues-Blackhawk playoff game at Chicago Stadium in 1990, with my Blues jersey and yelled at the top of my lungs all night as St. Louis won and lived to tell about it - not even bothered (of course, I had to tell them I was a beer vendor for the St. Louis Arena and to see me for Game 3. LOL)!

As long as you have your suit of armor on you'll be okay.
Seriously, it isn't that rough an area when compared to some of Chicago's other murder districts.
In 30+ years hanging around the building, I was only assaulted once.
As Joe said, keep quiet, mind your own business, blend in with the locals, and you will be okay.

It has been known to get rowdy. I have heard stories. If you are a Flames fan, do yourself a favour and don't wear your colours in their house. Why make yourself a bullseye. Just use that advice and you will be fine.

One of my teachers was a hawks fan and attended many games in the 80's. He was mugged twice. It may have changed but still be careful.

Goto a White Sox game on the south side of Chicago and then you can worry.
