Taxpayer dollars are being wasted on reading American's emails, snail mail, listening to phone calls, and searching people's homes, yet hardly any money is being spent on border security or inspecting cargo coming into the country.

Why the disconnect?

Does the government really think that 'terrorists' are so stupid that they are going to correspond by email or by phone nowadays?

A very tiny portion of the cargo (by container) is inspected coming into this country. Far less than most of you are alluding to.

because spying on us has nothing to do with terrorism. they are afraid of the american people (and in the uk they spy on them too) because the americans outnumber the weatlhy elites by a zillon to one. terrorism is an excuse. and you should be afraid to some extent, because they aren't looking for real threats of terrorism but people who they dont' like, their views, their heatlh status, working statues, their attitudes that conflict with their agendas, their religion or those who stand up for themselves or for what it right. they are looking for people who are gaining wealth and they don't like it when people become wealthy without having to pay them homage. also they are making terrorism fit so many things any innocent can be termed a terrorist and most people will envision an violent person because of the propaganda without thinking otherwise.

my question is why are the employees, the servants watching the masters or employers? why shouldnt' the people be watching them because they could themselves be terrorists?

no they are using terrorism as an excuse not a reason.

and when people lie and scam to spy on people without due process look out, they are looking for people to persecute, attack or arrest that they don't like or interfere with their crimes.

RRRR

"Does the government really think that 'terrorists' are so stupid that they are going to correspond by email or by phone nowadays" funny you say that. Did you know that hundreds of suspected terrorists have been detained by the government since 9/11 because they made these very mistakes? There are only a few ways to communicate on this planet, e-mail, telephone, regular mail, and they DO have to communicate.

As far as the other part..... The government does inspect shipping containers. However most likely any attack on America will be similar to the 9/11 attacks. If the terrorists really want to get a nuclear weapon into the US, then they're going to be able to, it isn't that hard. But the government doesn't believe that is how they'll attack. Possibly because they cannot get their hands on a nuke, or can't afford them, or maybe because its just too risky.

It's not that it's not important, it's just that the cost is so high. You can automate snooping digital communications quite easily without stalling the process, freeing up manpower to do other things. You can't automate cargo inspection, and it will hold up the process and decrease commerce.

Terrorists probably won't use our communication infrastructure to communicate messages, but it still has its uses. For example, if intelligence agencies think a terrorist is using a known alias, they can tune their filters to track all instances of that alias being used in the phone system. If you get a lot of hits in say, Billings Montana, it's a good bet that person might be there. Note that by doing this, no human operator needs to analyze the audio of a single conversation.

Cargo coming into America is inspected .It is also inspected before leaving the country for America. i know that for a fact as it happens to us every time.
I do not know of any Americans being spied on unless there is a good reason.
I see the inspections coming across the Border but they cannot inspect what is coming in from the tunnels or swimming across. Also it would amaze you what is hidden in trucks and cars. Some of them make it and some do not.

There really is no need to inspect the cargo. Anything a terrorist might want to use against us is already here.
Radioactive waste to make a "dirty bomb" is available in any hospital's garbage dumpster. Or fertilizer does the trick too.
Which is why the spying...they need to listen in so they know what's going on inside this country, because they've failed to put in place the tools to secure it!

Spying on Americans doesn't cost anything. Inspecting cargo interferes with commerce(money).

Because we allow it.Now if you speak up,they can consider you a terrorist. I think eventually the U.S. will become the N.American Union, and our Constitution will be void, maybe that's why our borders remain open and the war on terror continues.
