This is daft. He has performed against plenty of top club sides for Manchester United. The difference is, his best performances came a couple of years ago in a strong Manchester United side bolstered by a prolific Ronaldo. This England side is really mediocre, and though Rooney is a very good player, we all know he isn't truly first tier quality i.e. a once in a year talent. He's more on the level of Benzema, Balotelli, Ibrahimovic, Lewandowski, Huntelaar etc. He's a very good striker, but not a player who can drag a team through by the scruff of the neck against good opposition. He needs service in the bigger games. The only time you should really lay into him is if somebody is insistent that he has talent to rival the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, Xavi, Iniesta etc. Rooney has scored and created about as many goals as can be expected for a team which has been creatively deficient and notoriously negative in recent years.
