The 8800GT is a midrange model.
Unfortunately, according to latest benchmarks, the 3870 is more on a par with the 8800 GTX than the 8800 Ultra. Seems like ATI still needs to catch up a little bit, which will become more difficult when Nvidia releases the 9-series in February '09.

What the 3870 is, is a 2900xt, with faster processor, and faster memory. Unfortunately, although the 3870 has nearly 3 times as much stream processors, they're also clocked nearly 3 times slower. According to magazine Custom PC, the card is slower than the 8800gt by a margin.
Apparantly, the 3850 is a much better buy, as it is much cheaper, and only has less memory, something that is only needed at only high resolutions (think 1920x1200 instead of the 1280x1024 that most game at)
@Nick W, thats rubbish, 3870 is mid-range also, and cannot compete with 8800gtx AT ALL. Look at benchmarks in my sources.

a million) specific it is two) that motherboard has a PCI convey x16 slot, on a similar time as the 9800 GT makes use of a PCI convey x16 2.0 slot. at the same time as the two in effective condition, the two.0 has a bigger bandwidth. your 9800 GT would be truly bottlenecked because of this. in case you have already have been given the motherboard, dont subject approximately it. in case you're determining to purchase a clean motherboard, seem for some component with a 2.0 slot with the aid of fact it is extra effective destiny information.

the Geforce 8800 series are the best cards at the moment for gaming, but the ATI ones are better at the resolution ranges beyond 1600x1200 they are made for HD stuff so for movies or things that need very high resolution the ATI cards are better than Nividia.
in bench marks the ATI ones showed better preformnce at very high resolution
hope this help
