It sure seems true, doesn't it?
I know I haven't died yet and I've been through enough to kill "mere mortals", as I've been told... And I am much stronger for it...

So, just based on my own experience, I'd say , yes, its true.

Sort of - The truth is often that a "joke" directed in anger will be thought up quickly, so will often be directed at something obvious - Or something that has previously been noticed, such as a mannerism. So the answer is usually only partly true - The person will be fat, stammer, or whatever, but the "punchline" of the "joke" will be exaggerated into hurtfulness. While it might not then be true, it was based on partial truth, so the hurt will be great and usually cannot ever be fully made better, as the target will always wonder how much hurt was meant. Those comments can destroy life-long friendships instantly as they are so corrosive.

i was thinking about it yesterday. there is learning in everything. there is hurt, grieving, mourning. but i guess that not everyone gets stronger. some people do not. i might say that what does not kill us has the potential to make us stronger, should we choose to walk the path that way.

not everyone gets stronger. some go insane, have ptsd, become homeless and actually do less well after a crisis. now by crisis i mean things like losing job, death of loved one, terrible accident/disability, divorce etc.

Not if you take it literally.
For example, a bad car wreck might not kill us, but it could leave us weak or disabled (not stronger).
In daily life, it is about half right.
Right half:
Adversity sometimes brings out the best in us and makes us a better person. We learn lots from our struggles.
Wrong half:
Continuous stress in a situation (job) can weaken us and ruin our health.

Not really - a small bit of arsenic will not kill you but neither will it make you stronger !

However I understand this saying meaning that overcoming things helps develop character...

I used to in my younger years. Now that I'm a lot older I realize that everything that doesn't quite kill me does bring me that much closer to the grave. But it's great brainwashing for the young people so that they continue to persevere through hardships and think something good will come of it at the end.

Yes I do. I believe that things happen for a reason. The bad things that happen in our lives make us stronger. We can either feel sorry for ourselves, or use the situation to our advantage. Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I do. The trials and tribulations that we go through each and everyday teach us to make better decisions and ultimately be better human beings. What we experience makes us stronger.
