Because he thinks it will get him the nomination... and it just might. Oh what a simple minded nation we've become...
there was a time when religion was the law of the land...

Because he's a bleeding idiot, that's why. He took a quote of John Adams and paraphrased it to fit his needs for his speech. What Adams actually said was "Statesmen, my dear Sir, may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone, which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand." Not real unusual, given the beliefs of Adams' day. Also, he was one of the founders who was very religious and believed all virtue came from being religiously pious. Those more level headed about the "virtues" of religion held their ground and were victorious in the argument about whether to include a religious bent in the Constitution. In searching for a founder's quote to use or paraphrase in his speech, his speechwriters should have dug a little deeper. In our government today, we honor the separation of church and state, just as Jefferson did. Most of us are educated enough to understand the ridiculous notion of that statement. Too bad he isn't.

I think there has been an attempt to establish a theocracy for a while now. For Romney I think this is what he truly believes.

"Religion is regarded by the commoners as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful." --Seneca
have truer words ever been spoken? Why do you think there is so much flap abou religion in these sort of things? Doctors, architects, and scientists don't need to incorporate religion into their work, but for politicians it is practically a requirement.
It's all about the popularity contest. Many Americans are simple-minded enough to consider religion a prime voting prerequisite. No one would trust a doctor or lawyer simply going on his religious convictions, but for rulers, people seem to think that is what's important.

Again (I wrote this same thing a couple days ago) he claimed religion and God were responsible for "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness"
Again, NO MAN has a right to "Life". A man tossed out of an airplane with no parachute cannot protest to his God about his 'Right to Life" and be miraculously saved. Someone drowning in the middle of the ocean will not survive, regardless of how strongly he or she believes in their God.
"Liberty" is not an absolute right either. Anyone who is not willing to defend it will lose it, no matter which God they pray to. Look at the Jews in the Bible: Generations served under the cruel yoke of the Romans, Moses came along and freed them and all for what? So they could wander in the desert for 40 years? Is THAT the Freedom God "Guaranteed" them?
Lastly, no one ever said anyone had a "Right to Happiness", only the PURSUIT of that happiness. What if molesting underaged children is what makes you happy? Should you have the RIGHT to pursue that happiness?
It's time to end the delusion that organized religion is anything but another way those with power have of enslaving those who HAVE no power. This was what turned staunch supporters in the "Communist Ideal" into alcoholics. When you take away the catharctic process of unloading your burden on some God or other, you remove people's ability to bear the burden of their slavery.
I do not say there is no "God". I say organized religion is supposed to help us come closer to that God, but a spiritually enlightened people WILL NOT BE CONTROLLED, so it is NO ONE in power's best interest to assist the common man in his "reach for enlightenment".
Instead, religion has become a vehicle of separation, hate, suspicion and paranoia (not to mention child molestation).

Because of the zealots in this country today. Unfortunately people are looking for a little consistency in life now since 9-11 but cannot put such faith in government. The butt-head running the country said he was religious and the sheeple followed him. He has made his religion known and has now explained HIS views and expects all to get some sort of religion. What ever happened to the separation of church and state? Or the freedom of religion? Religion is being forced down our throats and no one seems interested in what our CONSTITUTION has to say about it.

I think most people in the United States think that we are a god fearing nation with god on our side. Just like the Arabs think god is on their side. The underlying thought process behind Romney 's statement is you can't be good country or win the war without the right religion. Ironically, religion causes most wars.

Unknown.
The last thing religion wants are people who think freely.
Since people will most likely turn away from religion when they are free to think critically about what they are being told.
blue316: LOL!!! Freedom is all about not having rules. It is the draconian rules that the Communists use to keep their masses in line.

Freedom calls for a set of values. you won't be able to place self assurance in having a regulation to conceal each experience. does no longer or no longer this is extra effective to hire somebody who won't scouse borrow out of your economic corporation or hire somebody who will attempt to discover some technical way around regulations to get what they might. The extra values we've as a society the less regulations (regulations) are required to maintain standards. the place can we get our values? like it no longer, faith is the respond. it is not proper which faith you maintain on with with the aid of fact maximum them frown on stealing, homicide, and deceit. attempt to think of if purely those 3 values have been widespread.

It seems that god really scares the humanist. libs because they can't justify there life stile. Romney's religious beliefs should have nothing to do with his bib for the presidency. He is absolutely correct this country was founded on Faith in god and the freedom to worship god any way you want. separation of church and state was not to keep the church from getting involved in state matters it was meant to restrict the state from regulating the church. We left England because the state told us that we had to only one choose or leave.

If you actually listened to the Speech and had a rudimentary knowledge of history, you would know that Romney was quoting John Adams.
