A door is preferable. A curtain will look tacky.
Try a louvered folding door, or you can have a pocket door installed. I love these doors!

Hi
With the great and vast range of closet organizers available nowadays, you should be able to find something that you can use to store your itemes efficiently and neatly. Now that storage space needn't be an eyesore.
If looks aren't an issue, then I would go for a bifold closet door as this will help you to save space in your room. By using a bifold door, you won't need to make sure that the area immediately around the closet is free to allow the door to open.
If you do decide to go for a curtain, try not to use garish colored materials. Go for a pattern that will be in keeping with the general decor of the room. Has the added advantage of not standing so much.
The issues of insulation and fire retarding are always to be taken into account in your decision.

There aren't fire codes or building codes that 'require' a door on any interior doorway.
If you are considering a curtain to save space, or because the door was damaged, you can certainly do that for your own use. However, when you are ready to sell the house, a traditional door in that doorway could be important to a buyer.
For example, if I, as a buyer, saw a curtain in a doorway, I would think... "Wow, they must be really short of money if they can't even afford to fix the door. I wonder what OTHER repairs they skimped on?"

All my kids closets have curtains instead of doors. The floor space saved is amazing. We originally did it to save money when building but what a decorating asset it became!! they all have different types of curtain "doors" & different tybacks.
Our eldest has a gauzy shimmery hanging that matches her window treatments with extra fabric that puddles romanticly on the floor to the side. Our youngest uses it as a tent & plays behind it!!
I say go for it! You can always put up doors later.Your only held back by your own creativity.

A door isn't really that important on a closet I guess, considering that its a 2nd room. However if the closet is on an outside wall, not having a door could let some cold in if you live in a wintery place so consider that too.
