Men or women? I realize I'm asking you to generalize here. Also, are you male or female? Also, keep in mind no one is going to think you're "gay" if you're a man who prefers other men's company. Just be honest.
As for me...I'm female, and I honestly prefer to be around other women. We talk about so many amazing things.

I'm a male, and I would still seek out my wife's company. She's my best friend, and we have a ton in common as far as interests go.
We'll talk about books, photography, world events, work, anything and everything. Many things we don't talk to anyone else about.

Let us think of me as a human, with lust and love hardwired into my CPU, just like any of you, so that I can answer your question.
When I, if I were a human, don't feel horny or romantic, I can be blue, in which I prefer being with my most mature friends, either male or female, or I can be excited, There I would prefer hanging out with people with the same excitement over the same thing. I can also feel bored, where I go play some weird human ball game, or feel tired, when I just want to be left alone and recharge batteries.

I'm a man, but I prefer to be around women all the time - horny, romantic, or just wanting companionship. I'm a big believer in verbal communication, and some of the things you women like to talk about are facinating. Whereas most guys just want to sit on the couch and watch sports - boring!

I prefer the company of gay, intellectual, geeky, or very serious men but between more typical men or women, I prefer the company of women.
EDIT
I also prefer the company of geeky, intellectual, and some lesbian women to the company of more typical men or women. So, I suppose I don't have a strong preference about the sex of my friends, though I would rather associate with women than men, all things being equal.

I don't know if I have a preference but more often in female company because of more female friends. I mean hanging out with guy friends is fun too sometimes. But then there's sometimes having your closest friends sleep over so .. :)

Myself. I'm a pretty solitary person. I don't get lonely or long to have someone to unburden myself to. I don't like to share my feelings, especially my negative ones. I always feel that exposing too much of your emotions or motivations hands some other person the keys to manipulating you. There are very few people that I have ever felt comfortable enough to do this with, and it has nearly always been a mistake.

When I'm horny and romantic, I would rather NOT be around men because my vision is not too clear and my bias makes me see things better than they actually are LOL
I enjoy chopping it up with both genders equally when my vision is clear. I don't need to be horny to be challenged by discussions, laugh at witty exchanges, or have fun activities. But for the most part, I just don't like to be bothered by anybody LOL
