Well, some libraries are turning over their overdue accounts to collection agencies. A collection agency may hound you for payment and in the process put bad marks on your credit. You will want to buy a house but your credit will keep you from getting the mortgage. The house you wanted will remain unsold and will be a drain on the sales prices of the other houses in the neighborhood. The sales price decline will expand thru your city and thru out the rest of the country. This will result in people not being able to sell their house to get out of the mortgage they cannot afford to keep (they will be considered "underwater"). This will result in people having to default on even more mortgages. This will result in the mortgage crisis in expanding. The US economy will suffer and we will all spiral into another great depression.
So you see, turning in your library books on time will save the economy. Man, I wish I could make one of those 1950's type education films based on this. That would be pretty funny.

if you have more than 13,800 books overdue at 79,000 libraries then the price of oil will rise and mortgages will drop. i'm sure of it. trust me on this.
