It shouldn't be, but, for some reason since the 80's religion and politics seem to go hand in hand. Is this a really bad trend?

Yes, read your history. Since there was a belief in a divine, religion has been terribly intertwined with politics. If you can find a truly secular society I'm all ears. Only two, of which I can identify, even tried it. Revolutionary France, where rejection of religion led to the reestablishment of the Catholic Church to primary by Napoleon only a few years after the initiation of the practice, and the Soviet Union and its satellites which just failed. Even then, in both societies a constant "war" was conducted to ensure that the expression of religious thought was not permitted in public as such would challenge the government.

All throughout history religion has been a part of politics.

In the case of the founding of America, religion was welcomed but regardless of their faith, no party's religion would be favored over another. Not in candidates, nor as was the case in England where they had a church sanctioned government.

Why? Because religious persecution was one of the main reasons the pilgrims left to come to America. It was that freedom they sought.

We simply can't let that hatred and persecution grow in America today.

I agree with NEO, religion and government have been too close since way long ago.

I believe that is why the founding fathers up in the establishment clause of the Constitution, to prevent a State controlled religion.

Religion had always influenced politics since the beginning of civilization, period. However, we can try to seperate the two physically or by laws, but the invisible influence cannot be removed from people's minds.

Religion and political power are both tools for leaders to keep the sheeple in line, nothing more.
As an atheist and a libertarian I feel uniquely free of both those forms of control.

Since the "80s" ...?

I hope you mean since the 1780s. Indeed. since the beginning of time.

When has religion NOT be intertwined with politics?

Look at the Biblical command, "Thou shalt not bear false witness."
Now look at our society's laws banning perjury.
Notice the similarity?
Do you think the similarity is just a coincidence?
