Isn't the UK Government disgusting in promoting everything that is wrong and marginalising the decent majority? When do you think the backlash will begin?

A girl that age who gets pregnant likely did so because she was being sexually abused by her father or another relative. Girls that age aren't naturally promiscuous. What do you propose doing about that? It used to be that girls who got pregnant were blamed for what happened to them. It never seemed to occur to anybody that they were actually the victims here.

I'm not sure. Abortions are not nice, and regardless of anyone's views, people are going to have them anyway. But an abortion using this method before nine weeks would be far less horrific than one when the baby is older and has to be torn apart by a surgical instrument. The only downfall is, because of the time limit, people will be rushed into making a decision they may really regret. The only option is to do a trial run and see if the number of abortions increase given this choice.

I agree with the others in saying that I'd rather a 10 year old have the right to get an abortion or morning after pill than to have that young girl's life be ruined because she felt that she "had" to have a baby. In 90% of the cases where someone that old is pregnant the child is either a product of a mother who had the child at an equally young age or where the child was raped. More often than not these children were raped or manipulated by an adult male, only to find that they have gotten pregnant from that that encounter. It's easy to say that they should have said no, but a lot of these girls lack the knowledge to know that they *could* say no or tell someone about it.

I've found that my viewpoint on many of these girls have changed since I started working in a pediatric ER. There were too many neglected children that came in because they were the offspring of a mother who had a child too young. They were unable to get an abortion or morning after pill & refused to give the baby up for adoption. (Most women are unable to or are not encouraged to give a baby up for adoption.) I've seen some terrible, terrible things happen to such children, things that would make people swear that it would have been more humane for them to have never been born.

I think that we as a society need to stop being so freaking selfish & to start educating these children better on their own self worth. Proper sex education & making sure that they have protection is a start, but it does not come close to making sure that these young men & women know that they are special & that they don't have to have sex in order to be "cool" or "popular". We need to make sure that parents are taking proper care of their children & that they are not neglecting them in order to have their own fun. Maybe if we do this there will be fewer kids having underage sex or babies.

When will we bring back good, old fashioned shame? People do the things that they do because it's acceptable. If parents didn't let their children have anything to do with the "bad kids," if society shunned the men and women who had casual relations and then didn't take care of their responsibility there would be far fewer people doing it. No, we don't have a right to judge anyone else but we, as a society, do have a right to judge their actions and to stand up and say that we are tired of their poor behavior affecting our lives because it definitely does.

Mary N: I actually know of several. It's not impossible at all and is, in fact, becoming more and more common and kids continue to physically develop at a faster pace. It's the reason why I can walk into a high school and still be told to get to class.

Tracey - I couldn't agree more, but, here in Canada, kids as young as 12 or 13 can get a morning after pill from Teen Health Center's without even notifying the parents of the need. My 14 year old cousin was told by a clinic, that she did not need to tell her parents about her abortion, and that all she would need to do is go for an hour of counselling.

These programs need to make sure that parent's have the opportunity to parent. (even the best parent is still human)

Do you honestly think a 10 year old is making a free choice to have irresponsible recreational sex? If a 10 year old girl is having sex, there is an adult either neglecting or abusing her. Either way, it's time to call CPS.

And yes, I think a morning after pill is preferable to both abortion and pregnancy for 10 year olds.

EDIT to Mary, below: I don't know about the UK, but in America we are seeing girls reach puberty earlier and earlier. Part of the cause is nutritional - overall higher fat, vitamin and mineral content as well as the use of hormones in our food supply. Menstruating at 10 years old is unusual, but not unheard of. Sadly, they can get pregnant, but they face many physical complications if the pregnancy is carried to term.

Would you rather a pregnant 10-year-olds and abortion for 10-year-olds rather than morning-after pills for 10-year-olds?

How about the radical notion that parents start parenting their children?

Your questionary is obviously incendiary.

Show me a 10 year who menstruates and is capable of pregnancy.

"Maybe' (who posted up above) said it exactly how I feel only better than I could have expressed it.
