In the installer booklet of each water softener they indicate amount and formula of the salt ,so when you going to buy SALT check the formula is same as manufacture recommend ,although what brand is not important.

I buy the inexpensive stuff sold at Wal-mart and haven't had a problem in years with it. I buy regular salt and the rust buster salt and then alternate bags. I bought the system new from Culligan but didn't want their delivery service charges.

I use Pro Soft with Rust Buster because that is the brand that they sell where I shop. I buy the Rust Buster version because of the iron content in my ground water.
