OK, my Dad is almost 60 years old and you hear far too often about people having heart attacks while shoveling snow. This is why we are seeking a snow thrower.

Depends on those 6 inches of snow. If it's wet heavy snow than even a $1500 snow blower will have trouble with it. If it's light fluffy stuff, than I wouldn't bother unless your driveway is huge.

The better snowblowers are two stage - meaning the big auger moves the snow to a second auger that spins very fast and blows the snow.

Tecumseh snow king is the best engine. I've had my snowblower for several years, that engine fired up on the first pull this winter. I have a Simplicity with 8 HP Tecumseh, dual stage. But then I live in NH where 20" isn't uncommon. With the light fluffy snow, mine will toss it a good 50-75 feet away from the driveway. With the wet stuff, I'm lucky if it will get it out of the shoot.

edit -

It's the wet heavy snow that is most associated with people having a heart attack. Given your concern, I'd consider hiring someone (landscaping contractor) to clear it for him. Problem will be finding someone reliable that does the job the way he wants it done.

I work at a farm equipment dealership. You should be able to get a Troy Bilt 521 squall for under $450. These are very nice units, I've sold a couple around here.
