There are 2 cores. The outer is liquid iron-nickel. The inner is solid iron-nickel. The inner core is not molten because the high pressure in the core raises the melting point of iron way above the temp of what the core actually is.

Inge Lehmann was the first to propose the inner core was solid based on P-waves.

Sir Harold Jeffreys discovered the outer core was liquid based on both P and S-waves (which do not travel through liquid).
