Thanks for everyones answers, I personally believe the people who are having issues with a FANTASY world should get over it and stop taking it so seriously. I thought the same about the people who freaked out about harry potter. the movie is rated PG13 for fantasy violence, and it doesn't seem like a kids movie (or book, if the movie is watered-down) to me.

people are saying that its bad because the author was apparently an atheist that wrote the books to counter the chronicles of narnia. however if anyone thinks that by watching these movies that their belief system will be shattered, then maybe they weren't as stable as they thought in thier beliefs, and they need to re-evalute what they truly believe in and become more grounded in their faith before they start to judge a work of fiction. (im 17 and my mom does not want me to go see it)...its a MOVIE people!!!!!

Most people believe that there is a God. Christians believe that God has existed for all time, and will exist forever, and that he is loving, kind, infinitely good, and that he deserves to be worshiped by all people, who he created.

An atheist is someone who believes there is no God. The man who wrote the Golden Compass book is an atheist, and he would like to persuade people that he is right - that there is no God. His books and movies are intended to do just that.

But if God truly is what the Christians claim he is, then it would be an insult to God if people said he didn't exist when in fact they should be worshiping him.

So if you believe that there is a God, and that he is good, then I would recommend that you not bother watching this movie. Sometimes it is better to just stand for what you believe and not give another person the opportunity to put doubts in your mind. Especially if you're just a kid and the other person is a very persuasive adult who has different ideas about God than you.

Well it's not bad... the movie's actually getting pretty good reviews. But the controversy is cause the movie is based on Philip Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy (the 1st one). He's an atheist and the trilogy has some anti religion messages & yes it does end with God being revealed to be a fraud & killed. But this is all set in a fantasy world. And people are taking way too seriously.

It's bad because it's depressing and because it shows extreme nastiness to children (which is also depressing). Other people are stressed because of religious/athiest/non-religious themes from the books, but my complaint is the general dark theme of the books. I don't like to be depressed and I get very stressed by even fictional accounts of children being hurt by the people who are supposed to protect them. I DON'T think it's a childrens' movie nor are the books childrens' books.

I also got to thinking... maybe it's labeled "childrens" because children don't know anybetter and are easily swayed.. I mean, look at the bad guys in all of the fictional movies.. do you think they're good or bad? I think they're bad, like the eveil witches from Disney movies ect... so maybe theis athiest guy is trying to go to our younger generations and sway them since he knows that most of adults have already made up their minds about religion......

I don't know.. I was just wondering if it was as bad/good as people say....

I read the book, didn't like it. These people swear up and down the kids kill "God." Problem with what they say, the kids don't kill anyone!!!! The kids were the ones in danger from the adults in this book/film. These people don't have anything worthwhile to do then make up things, and go around telling people what they should and should not see, watch, read, or listen to.

It's not BAD, people are simply overreacting to a work of FICTION. The Catholic League has declared it 'Atheism for Kids' and a lot of other Christian groups have jumped on board and are opposing it. Kids won't want to kill God because of the movie because, believe it or not, kids can see the difference between truth and fiction when it comes to movies.

It's bad because whacko fanatical Christian types say so... these people are no better than the screwy Muslims getting all worked up over cartoons of Mohammed.
