Well sometimes people over estimate the amount of freedom and input we are "supposed" to be granted by being Americans. This country was never founded with the intentions of being run entirely by the people, if that was the case there would be anarchy or some form of socialism which obviously isn't the case.
Should the government be able to make "law x" about "issue y"? Well there's always going to be a debate for that. Some issues appear more apparently wrong for the government to be involved, while others don't. The thing with topics like health care, marriage, and abortion are that they generally have a tie in with taxation which inherently makes it an issue that the government should be involved in to some extent.
Now the specifics regarding things like marriage and abortion in my opinion should only minimally involve the government when it comes to the overall legality of the issue since there are small discrepancies that could arise. For example, in having multiple spouses it would be pretty easy for people abuse taxation loop-holes by having a long list of spouses and dependents, or people could start abusing legal abortion as a means of birth control.
Long story short, the government has its place in our society but it does often seem to forget its role and purpose.

Considering the who the founding fathers were and the circumstances at the time, the government was created to protect landowners. They also had a major distrust of the public so they favored representative democracy, the electoral college, little meaningful public participation, etc.
The state is created or maintained these days with the idea that the public agrees to an artificial government body, a social contract if you will. But I think governments fear democracy and use deceit, propaganda, and fear to control citizens.

On the nose!!!
Fed government is the largest non-profit org in the world. The biggest difference is that if you don't pay this non-profit it will send its agents with guns to take your property and place you in prison or kill you if you resist.
You are free really......just don't break one of the millions of laws. For those that say just don't break the law FYI you can go to jail for speeding 1mph over the limit. We can all be placed in jail for something.
All laws that have no victim should not be a crime. Victimless laws should be illegal. The victims of these laws are everyone and their rights.

It should be to protect the country and referee the 50 states each state has it own constitution and bill of rights. The government has become to large the states need to be more independent and the federal gov needs to just do things required by them(each state)

Is this a trick question? Do you mean the ones who are voted in or the ones that actually run the country?
