I have thought I scared off a contact, but found out the person just couldn't reply right away. Maybe your contact is not sure if you will want to be a contact if the answer is yes.
People are all different on here. I guess it depends on how you feel about your contact having a record. Maybe explain what your thoughts are.

It sounds like it was a fair question if he was asking you a lot of questions. If he was so easily offended you shouldn't worry about it. And if he does you don't need to be contacting him any way.
