The author is NOT an atheist, he simply dislikes the Catholic church. That is the Christian Groups spreading their propaganda.
As to their criticism: If your system of belief can be shaken by an obviously fictional movie with a talking polar bear, it must not be that strong to begin with.

the Golden compass movie does not have a thing to do with atheism, the whole problem people are having is that the book was written by an atheist...any aspects of that, that was in the book has been taken out to make it family friendly...people need to get over it...it was a very good movie and i was actually looking for the big controversy that i had heard about and i didnt find much at all, what i found i did because i was looking very hard. so do not let what other people are saying about this movie change your mind, some are just closed minded about things and others are talking about something they didnt even watch, and dont want to take the time to watch
so my opinion is overreacting.
PS...Freedom rocks!!!

As a Christian I always think it's an overreaction to actively try and "ban" a book or movie. For starters, it just provides free publicity, and secondly, it stifles free thought. As a mother, if my children were still teenagers I'd advise them NOT to watch to movie or read the books until they were older. That's because I found them to be fairly depressing overall, and because I'm sensitive to descriptions of child abuse -- and there are quite a few of those in the books. If my children were over the age of 16, I'd let them make their own decision after I gave them my advice. Any younger and I'd make it an order, not a suggestion. This, however, is not censorship in my opinion, it's protection. I don't think they should NEVER read it, just not read it at such an emotionally vulnerable age. (Then again, I've been accused, by my now grown children, of being overprotective. My argument is that it's better too protective than not protective enough. Now they can read anything they like, watch anything they like, and make up their own minds about issues.)

Blatant over reaction. I mean come on. First of all God is NOT a person, he can not be killed. The man in the book who claims to be god is a man with delusions and high on power obviously.
I have seen the story compared to Star Wars and it does parallel the story line rather well. So where are all the calls to boycott and ban that franchise?
from Pullmans website...
His Dark Materials seems to be against organized religion. Do you believe in God?
I don't know whether there's a God or not. Nobody does, no matter what they say. I think it's perfectly possible to explain how the universe came about without bringing God into it, but I don't know everything, and there may well be a God somewhere, hiding away.
Actually, if he is keeping out of sight, it's because he's ashamed of his followers and all the cruelty and ignorance they're responsible for promoting in his name. If I were him, I'd want nothing to do with them.
and to that I say a big hell yeah!

I personally have never seen the movie so I cannot say whether I think is is child appropriate/Christian friendly etc. or not but I feel the "Christians" are justified in not wanting to see the move if it shows thigs that are against their beliefs and I cannot for the life of me understand why so many people are on here hating on them and their choices! If you as a non Christian like the movie then go see it, go buy it when it comes on dvd so you can see it whenever you want but don't be upset w/ them cause they dont like it and want to protect their children! And for everyone how says its just a movie and if the movie effects your belief system then it was not strong enough to begin w/...think about what you are saying! Just because they choose not to watch the movie does not mean that it will cause them not to belive but EVERYone knows (or at least SHOULD) that the more you immerse yourself in something the more its embedded in your brain. If they disagree w/ it they don't have to see it and they have the right to say why and try to convince others not too (just like you have the right to ignore them). Them watching a movie they obviously dont believe in would make about as much sense as me (as a black woman) watching a modern fairly tale about slavery just for fun. I don't like it, if they made a movie about it I would do my best to convince others not to see it and those who want to see it would have the right to ignore me!!!

HUGE over reaction. the movie has no religious connotations in it, but book has a few. BUT they're not anti-god or whatever the ignorant fundies are saying. as mentioned earlier, it's about killing a person PRETENDING TO BE GOD, who's being a big ar*e. Also, the magisterium is supposed to be an evil version of the catholic church, hell maybe the iranian gov't if you interpret it that way. that adds a bit of irony to the criticism, because fundies dislike the catholic church, and loath islam.
the author is agnostic, not atheist, BIG difference. One flat out denies god while the other is not sure and chooses not to take a stance.

for sure if human beings carry to a cheished thought and that's attacked then they does no longer be vulnerable to assist it. people who're asserting it fairly is in basic terms a action picture possibly are no longer keeping solid perspectives of Christianity. If some thing they have been into became attacked they might no longer opt to assist it the two. i desperate this week that i does no longer spend money to make certain the Golden Compass. no person advised me to try this it became my own decision. If yet another Christian is going to make certain the action picture it fairly is as much as her or him. i does no longer tell them they might desire to no longer see it. i'd in basic terms tell them what i understand approximately it. it fairly is a topic rely for a individual's very own conviction with the aid of fact the Bible does no longer limit a beliver from seeing movies usually. they could evaluate extra. I easily have study numerous articles approximately it and considered the promo (the 1st 5 minutes) and that i understand sufficient to understand what it fairly is approximately. Animals are referred to as demons interior the hollow intro of the action picture. Animals that are depicted as pets or pals are being exceeded as as a demon which might make youthful childern extra accepting of the assumption of demons. If there is an prepared boycott so what? Is there no longer freedom of the clicking and freedom to no longer partake in a number of that press additionally? If this action picture isn't a huge financially grossing photograph then it is going to convince some action picture manufacturers to no longer make those varieties of action pictures. I in basic terms desire people who boycott have their own pesonal know-how with regard to the action picture in any different case they gained't look that rational to protest some thing they won't understand.

lets put it this way-
here's a review i read:
I was hired to give postive feedback on this movie
by brett_mba (movies profile) Dec 7, 2007
I was hired to blog positive feedback on this movie along with twenty other people in the room with me. I went to the movie. I have a soul and CANNOT recommend this movie to anyone. If you have children keep them away from this trash. The book was written by an anti God author who said it was his life goal to keep children from God. Do your homework before Hollywood destroys your family.
