I've been a long time Mac user.
But my old Mac started to become too old to keep updated.
I could only afford a good used Dell (Pentium 4). It came with Windoze XP.
I reformatted the drive to allow me to run Ubuntu Linux (available for free) as well as Windoze.
I use Linux 99% of the time, the only time I need to ever use Windoze is when I have to use one specific program that only works under that OS.
Running on the same hardware (1.5 GHz Pentium 4, 1 Gig RAM), Linux is at least 3 times faster than XP.
The only drawback to Linux is that when something misbehaves or requires deeper attention, it's more complicated to solve. But it is solvable and at no cost.
PS: If funds were not an issue, I'd get the sleekest, sexiest new Mac I could!! I still love Macintosh and if it were possible I'd still be running System 6 on an SE/30!

Both + Linux. But, it's like asking "Ford or Chev?", you will only get opinions.
If you're asking:
What is the best operating system? They are all different, offer different pros and cons, and fill different needs for different people. For example, Gamers have different needs than Podcasters, etc. I personally believe that the best operating system is the one that you LIKE to use and that meets ALL your needs. That is the bottom line.
If your really asking:
Is a MAC worth the price? Try this experiment: Price out a MAC at www.apple.com Then, price out a virtually hardware identical PC at www.Dell.com, www.hp.com etc. Then, add Vista Ultimate (like OS X), M$-Office (Neo-Office free for OS X), Norton Internet Security (no known OS X malware), Back up software (Included in OS X), and any other software you may need on the Windows PC (Likely free on OS X).
Then, compare prices, I believe you will find that the Mac PRICE will be very close.
Finally, go to an Apple Store and take one for a test drive, ask LOTS of questions and then, decide for yourself.

Windows has more widespread support among the gaming industry. Unix based OSes are nice... but only a few games are available for 'em. Macs included.
Now that Apple dropped it's PowerPC CPU, there is much more compatability between the different systems.

I use mircrosoft windows XP Pro. if i didn't do as much gaming i would use a Mac because of how much safer it is on the internet and how few viruses are made for it.

Microsoft, just because it has more stuff for it. I'm tired of hearing about MAC's increased security, because I can just back my stuff up and re-format my hard drive if I get lots of viruses, or just use system recovery. So definetly, Microsoft.
