the first two answers are both right.
I updated my drivers and had the same thing happen to me.
In the end I uninstalled the drivers and re-installed the original drivers on my motherboard disk.
After this I had no problems.
Make sure to get rid of any leftover program files with the same name afterward then empty the recycle bin to end the assosciation reboot then re-install your original drivers.
If during uninstall it says that the files are in use then make sure to end process in your task manager.

Perhaps your system thinks it is something else. When you do
a reinstall, it picks what it thinks it is. You can try to remove the
C-media device and tell the system it is a Realtek. Or you can try and get the driver for the C-media device and see if that
will work as well.

determine what your sound card is (open up the case, even if if that is a card it is plugged into the motherboard - get the manufacturers call and variety #, pass on line and seek for the motive force for it. If the cardboard is geared up into the motherboard, then attempt to determine the producer of the board. it could have initially incorporate CD's with mobo utilities and drivers except it replaced right into a prefab device. you may desire to be waiting to hunt and locate the drivers however. There are utlities for detecting your hardware, or you could only attempt downloading most of the greater ordinary ones and attempting them (soundblaster sixteen, 32, awe64, and so forth)

Just install the drivers for your motherboard. The sound driver should be included.
