My cable modem is connected to my desktop via the usb connection no ethernet card in the desktop. Can I connect the wireless router up with the ethernet port on the modem. The modem has both a usb port and a ethernet port. Bottom line can the cable modem have both the usb and the etherent connection used? Does the modem act as a hub itself sharing the IP address through both ports or is only one of the selected ports (usb,etherent) able to have an ip assigned to it.

I forgot to mention the wireless router has no usb connection all ethernet ports.

Option 1. You want the easy way, just get an ethernet card for the desktop they are less than $15.00. you will also find they work much more reliably than the USB in most cases.
Option 2. Get a router with USB / Lan connection. They are hard to find but they do exist. Connect your modem to the router your computer to the USB on the router. This is the expensive answer.
Option 3. Get a usb wifi adapter for your PC. Then both laptop and PC can connect wireless and the absence of an ethernet card is no longer an issue. These are also cheap about 15-30 bucks.

you connect the cable modem to the wireless router..then connect the usb wireless reciever to the PC.
I have this set up for my wives desktop.
in the basement i have a cable modem attached where the cable comes into the house. then right next to the modem i have the wirelss router connected to the modem. then on the desktop there is a little blue box with a small antenna/flag on top that plugs into the usb port on the computer...that it..your done. my laptop has an internal wireless modem and i can connect anywhere in the house or outside with the same config. if you are connecting the cable modem directly to the pc why would you need wireless? i don't get it. sorry.

Depending on your provider using the usb port and the ethernet port at the same time will NOT work. In our area you cannot use both simultaneously because the modem will try and pull an IP address for each port and then they cancel each other out. The best thing you can do is try and see if it will work. At worst it won't work and you will just have to reset your modem.

The telephone line goes into the back of your modem where it says DSL. One end of one ethernet cable goes into the back of your modem and the other end goes into the WAN port at the back of your router. You will need at least one more ethernet cable to go from your computer's ethernet port to the back of the router. If there are other computers, they connect with an ethernet cable that connects from the computer's ethernet port to the router. You will of course need to connect the modem and router to the power supply
