So I am pregnant with my second baby right now and my mom was telling me that I should breast feed this baby because the world is out to kill our babies.
Now this is the reason I am saying this, my mom said she seen on the news were they recalled the enfamil formula for babies.
So if any of you use that for your baby you may want to check that out some how.
I know with my daughter that is what I was using when she was younger.
Good luck!

Thanks for the people that found out what I wasn't sure about ... thanks for adding on for me!
I just don't want any babies to be harmed that is why I posted this!

Oh and actually for the woman that said it sounds like my mom just wants to make sure I breastfeed, I didn't breastfeed with my first and she didn't breastfeed with me so why would she care if I did with this one?
Even though I do know that I am at least going to try to breastfeed with this one for a little while after birth at least!

They recall infant formulas all the time.
http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2006/NEW01323.html
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is alerting the public to a recall being conducted by Mead Johnson for their GENTLEASE powdered infant formula, lot number: BMJ19, use by 1 Jul 07. This lot was found to contain metal particles, consisting of up to 2.7 millimeter in size.
No illnesses have been reported to date. However, in the rare instance that an infant were to inhale the infant formula into the lungs, the presence of these particles could present a serious risk to the infant's respiratory system and throat. Any injuries associated with this problem would be likely to show up within three to four hours. The symptoms could be varied depending on whether there is damage to the throat or lungs. Damage to the throat may include coughing, difficulty swallowing or difficulty breathing. Similarly damage to the lungs could include coughing and difficulty breathing. If you may have fed this lot of GENTLEASE to your baby, and you have any concerns about your baby's health, you should contact your baby's health professional for guidance.
There were approximately 41,464 24-ounce cans of this lot of recalled product distributed, beginning on December 16, 2005, through many major retail stores across the country, so the consumer should concentrate on the code on the can rather than on the place of purchase. The affected products can be identified by the lot number and expiration/use by date embossed on the bottom of the can of BMJ19, use by 1 Jul 07.
Recalls of Infant Feeding Products

What? Baby Formula has been recalled? In fact, between 1982 and 1994 alone, there were 22 significant recalls of infant formula in the United States due to health and safety problems. Seven of these recalls were classified by the FDA as "Class I" or potentially life threatening.
And the problem doens't stop there. In the following we detail 9 recent recalls of formula. Recalls were made for all the well known companies, Nestle (Carnation), Abbott, Mead Johnson, Wyeth, Nutricia and more. Products were recalled for such things as contamination by Salmonella, Klebsiella Pneumoniae and bits of glass.
Some of the recalls were huge, the recall of jarred infant formala by Mead-Johnson contaminated with bits of glass covered more than 102,000 jars. Recalls noted below were made for such well known products as Alsoy, GoodStart, Isomil, Nutramigen and Soylac.
Hard to believe? Want to check out future recalls? You can get the information from where we got it: the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Their site for recalls is:

Parents are being advised about a kosher infant formula feed that has been recalled in Israel following the death of three babies.
The soya-based milk substitute, called Tzimchit Super Formula, is manufactured in Germany and sold by Remedia in Israel. It has been recalled following the deaths of three babies. Although it is not exported to New Zealand by the parent company, it is possible a specialist importer might have sold it here, or parents could have brought supplies back after visiting Israel, or purchased the product via the Internet or mail order.
The product has been found to be possibly lacking in vitamin B1 at the levels that are normally required in infant formula. Vitamin B1 is an essential dietary requirement for babies' growth and development.
Parents who have been feeding their baby with one of these products should stop immediately and contact their doctor. Treatment can be given for vitamin B1 deficiency. Health professionals can also provide information about alternative ways of feeding babies and alternative kosher products that are available.

With all the lead being found in toys, I admit- I'm starting to think the same thing...
Formula is actually recalled quite a bit ( far more often than breastmilk LOL) and was yet another reason I chose to reasearch and stick with breastfeeding this time around. I'm so glad I did. When something is recalled a few dozen times for things like glass and plastic particles and E Coli it worries me.
Sure, millions of babies live through being formula fed and thrive (my own daughter did) but now that I know better, I'm not taking the chance.

Recall information:
"Consumers should immediately stop using Enfamil Gentlease Lipil infant formula powder in 24-ounce cans, batch number BMJ19, use by July 07, because of possible contamination with metal particles, State Public Health Officer Dr. Mark Horton warned today. The batch code is located on the bottom of the can."

Whether or not formula is contaminated, it's never as good as breastfeeding.

My daughter used enfamil and there was never any recall. I think that your mother is just trying to be sure that you breastfeed. I think alot of people think that breastfeeding is the only way that your baby will get proper nutrition, but enfamil and other formulas have come a long way. Just ask your doctor before you go believing your mothers paranoia.

I'd believe it. Just look at all the foods that have been recalled in the past year. My baby gets breastmilk and breastmilk only. No chance of that being recalled!
p.s. Google Baby Formula Recalls..........the results will sicken you.

The most recent baby formula recall I can find online is Similac in September 2006. I don't think you have anything to worry about. But it is healthier to breast feed anyway, so you can pass your own antibodies to your child.
Good luck!

I wish there was more of a social and cultural move towards breast feeding in this country.
Its pretty pathetic that we as a nation have a HIGHER infant mortality rate than Saudi Arabia, they say its in part because of expensive health care (which doesnt really fly because the ER has to treat you whether you have it or not) and mostly because baby's arent breast fed, and dont even get colostrum at birth.
I know its personal choice and blah blah, and in some cases woman cant because they work, but honestly, if you have to choose whats best its obviously boobies.
Its hard to nurse, and there should be more support and better education about it. Most women dont even know anything about breast milk. Like the white blood cells, the antibodies, and immunities- let alone about their babies, like how they have almost NONE of those things for their first year.
Formula is a good alternative, and babies thrive on it, but its still not best.
