More evidence of a violent society, poor gun control, a hypermasculine American male role model, and desperate post-9/11 youth.

I'm only surprised that it doesn't happen more often.

Eventually, I am sure that every mall will have its own well-armed security force, who can easily and swiftly eliminate such threats. Likewise, I wouldn't be surprised if larger stores don't install metal detectors or randomly search people.

The plain fact of the matter is that such incidents will go down when the media stops reporting them because, unfortunately, as with the infamous OJ car chase, lunatics want their fifteen minutes of fame even at the cost of their lives, and they don't care who they take down with them to get it. Similarly, police should not engage in polite talks with armed criminals or lunatics (how many episodes of "COPS" or similar have you seen where the caught-in-the-act-on-camera criminal starts asking dumb questions like, "What did I do?", and the cops, arguably equally dumb, bother to respond! As soon as that happens, the bad guy is put into a position of "power" and control, albeit limited, in that YOU are giving HIM answers, like a good student to a bad teacher! Just read the jerk his/her rights and take him/her into custody, okay? Gag him/her if you have to!).

Thus endeth the rant! ;)

I lived in Omaha at one time and I must say, as shocked as I was, I couldn't imagine what that community is going through. It seems to be in the places you least expect it. It's incredibly sad to see what our world has come to. When I was young, I was teased horribly, had major home-life issues and all that but never once thought about taking the life of anyone else because of it. It's senseless and wrong! How extremely selfish one has to be and then to be a punk and take his own life. Guess it means there is one more bad one outta the gene pool...too bad 8 good ones had to go too.

I think it is completely awful! I cannot believe that people have this in them to do. I was watching the news this morning and it made me cry seeing all the pictures of the people who were killed.. what an awful thing. These people were just totally innocent people who were shopping, or working... they were someone's grandparents, sisters, husbands, fathers, sons, daughters, mothers... and this miserable kid decides he is so unhappy with his own life that he feels like he should take the lives of 8 people only to end up taking his own. Selfish little bastard. Honestly, to turn the lives of these families upside down and cause such hurt and sadness, and right before one of the happiest times of the year, it's just mind boggling. He should have just taken himself and saved everyone else the hurt! My heart goes out to all of those families, and I pray that their hearts heal, and they are somehow able to eventually find peace!

God Bless.

I feel that this person should've just killed himself, and let the world be, why should the rest of us suffer because he had some issues? It's also more horrid that it was during the holiday season, and I wonder why he picked the mall, and not another public place...

It was a horrible thing to happen! It makes me very nervous to go shopping or really do anything in public. It made me realize how prone we are to situations like this! My thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones of the victims!

I was horrified of course, but I was further horrified by his friend's comment afterward: "I don't think any less of him. He would never do something like that for fun. He wanted to go out in style, and that's what he did." I think his friend better get a psychiatric evaluation at least....

like any other shooting, we get used to it in this country, it's like if u didn't die by car accident some body will shoot u in ur own house or while u are shopping!!!! but what i don't undrestand is the media didn't talk about it so agressive like they did if the shooter was black man, hispanic male, or corean teenager, why didn't mention his ethnicity i was watching the news all day long to see who is that guy then the next day they show him as white boy, they should call him white male like they did with everybody else, that's what make me mad. about the people are killed i'm so sorry for them and their family.
