Quinlang, not all brits celebrate Christmas, but we still call it Christmas.

2007-12-07 03:14:28 · update #8

You know why? cos it's Christmas, you don't have to celebrate, but call it what it is. i don't celebrate other festivities but i call them by the true name.

You are exactly right. It is to be PC.
Actually there are 3 other holidays celebrated around that time: Hanukkah, New Year's Day, and Kwanzaa. This is a legitimate reason for saying "The Holidays" in some contexts. But it has gone beyond that. There are a few [mainly militant atheists] who want to suppress the mention of anything Christian. They have intimidated the commercial world, among others, so that they are reluctant to mention Christmas.
The irony is, that without Christmas, there would be no huge "Holiday" shopping season. Hanukkah has been somewhat commercialized only as a way of competing with Christmas. Kwanzaa has never been much commercialized. And New Year, though a time for parties, can't compete with Christmas as an economic factor.

No, im America, Christmas is Christmas, but as Hanukkah and Kwanzaa is also widely celebrated, the season is regarded as the holidays to cover all events.
As wikipedia says "In the United States and periodically Canada, the winter holiday season is known as a period of time surrounding Christmas that was formed in order to embrace all cultural and religious celebration rather than only Christian celebrations. Usually, this period begins near the start of November and ends with New Year's Day on January 1. The holiday season is usually commercially referred to with a broad interpretation, avoiding the reference of specific holidays like Hanukkah or Christmas. Traditional "holiday season" festivities are usually associated with winter, including snowflakes and wintry songs. In some Christian countries, the end of the festive season is considered to be after the feast of Epiphany, although this has only symbolic value"

EDIT:: So i take time out to expain this and people give me bad ratings just because I dont say what they want to hear?!

EDIT:: They don't "lump all into one, they just take into account all the different people who make up there nation

Look, it has nothing to do with "political correctness," or anything like that. Three of the biggest US holidays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years, come within about six weeks of each other. That's what's being referred to by "the holidays." There's nothing new about that; this time of year has been called "the holidays" for a long, long time.

We're full of Merry Christmas and Jesus in the Manger here in the USA. Other religions are celebrating, too.... we're all cool except for the Muslims who live and love to be irritating to anyone who is not like them. And they are very good at that.

Because the stupid "political correctness" doctrine imposed by the inferiority complex of a few says that we must not offend those that, at the end, will feel offended by just nothing anyway...hahaha!!!

Merry Christmas!!!
