I like Fugazi and all...but they are cited as one of the originators of the 'emo' sound.

The problem is it's become an industry produced fad... just like grunge...just like hair metal. The big five record companies are milking it for all it's worth.

no not at all..... there are many more origins of emo than just Fugazi and the D.C Hardcore scene- also emo today- the pop stuff on the radio is nothing like what emo was back them... read this article on the origins of EMO_ it's really interesting.

of course the record companies are milking it and making it more 'pop... thats what they always do- thats how they make money. That's all they care about- Money. And lots of bands- can only see a quick easy way to make a buck- they say jump and they ask how high!

Well, I would actually blame the fans of music for spinning the term to no longer focus on bands like Fugazi and Unwound and somehow land where it did. It seems like the current status is spun more from the Sunny Day, Jimmy Eat World, Jets to Brazil thread than the Fugazi acts and corporate-ized and what have you. If you're looking for the beginning of the genre though, Fugazi was one of the first.

I totally agree with you. I am getting sick of hearing that music and movies and stuff like that are the cause for all these tragic things that happen. I don't understand how someone can think that is it. My Chemical Romance is a good band and they are not the cause of this or in any other situation. It is sad what happened but MCR are not to blame nor any other band. I do not see how music can cause this.

I've read that too. It's almost like a kick in the teeth.
But Emo was a lot different in those days. It grew out of Hardcore/Hardcore Punk. They simply tweaked the style just enough to make it unique. Modern emo, with the poppy sound, came about because of bands like Samiam and what not.
If nobody remembers Samiam, they are the 99th song (Welcome to Dumpsville: Population You) on the Fat Wreck comp "Short Music For Short People."

Of course not.

This is just a hunch, but I'm pretty sure Ian Mackaye would have probably stopped recording music altogether and taken a monk-like vow of silence had he known that he could have potentially been implicated for inspiring/spawing such tracks as "The Black Parade" or "Thnx fr th mmrs" or "I write sins not tragedies" or any of the other crap out there.

I really have to say its Jimmy Eat World's fault. They had some emo sound with catchiness, and I think it just took off from there. And it kept evolving into what we know it as today.

I love fugazi, and it kinda isn't there fault because they had no idea that it would be really popular 20 years later...

I wish it would end tho, its almost like the 80's hair metal phase...

dont let it get to you, it has no effect on your life, yeah its anoying that all we hear on the raio now is crap, but thats what sites like pandora are for. also like you said, emo is another fad, like the others, it will die out until it is barely recognisable any more, its only a matter of time, rock and metal have been around for a long time, and they are here to stay.
