In his desperate efforts to show how British he is, Gordon Brown has at least never proposed a national motto.
But Lady Warsi, one of the two Muslim peers who interceded with the Sudanese government in the teddy bear case, tried yesterday to tempt Lord Hunt of Kings Heath, a junior minister in the Justice Ministry, into just such a reckless innovation. The newly-famous Lady Warsi invited Lord Hunt to give "his six words that would encapsulate this great nation".
Lord Hunt played for time by thanking Lady Warsi for her "magnificent work in Sudan", after which he said that although the Government was not in favour of a motto, it did see advantage in a "statement of values" showing "what it means to be a British citizen".
