I have had three children and it only broke on it's own once, with the first baby, and I was completely dilated after laboring for 24 hours and was starting to push. With the other two it was broken by the midwife when I was 3cm with one baby and 5cm with the other.
It will only break prior to the onset of labor contractions in about 10-15% of women.

With my first child my water broke before contractions started, and it took me by complete surprise. I had just been to the hospital the night before due to some bleeding, and was told the bleeding was coming from outside of my cervix, most likely due to lifting something too heavy, and it was no cause for concern. I was 35 weeks, and the baby was breech so it was a HUGE gush of water, like you see in the movies.
With my third child, my water broke while I was watching "Baby Story" on TLC - ironic, right? I was 39 weeks. This time was completely different than the first as it was just a very small gush and then continued to leak. I had not started contractions at this point yet either, it was about 10 a.m., and my daughter was born at 1:48 p.m.
They say it is very uncommon for your water to break before you are in active labor, but for me it happened 2 out of 3 times, so who knows? In any case, it was completely unexpected both times and caught me by surprise!

The one time my water broke on its own I woke up thinking I had to pee got halfway down the hall to the bathroom and my water broke. I was 39 weeks, luckily the contractions (or at least the ones I could feel) didn't start until an hour later. I was lucky because I live an hour from the hospital and once my contractions started I had her an hour and a half later.

I felt fine - I was climbing up and down some hilly areas picking Violets with about 3 weeks to go. A complete surprise.
My contractions didn't start for about 8 hours after and I think having an enema was what kicked them off at around 2.0 a.m. Daughter born at 8.30 a.m. six and a half hours later, on Easter Monday.
A complete surprise - I had Mum in law visiting from London for the holiday weekend, so she was able to see her first granddaughter before heading home.

My water didn't break it, the doctor had to break it for me. I was a week overdue and woke up to contractions at 4am. The only night my whole pregnancy I didn't take a bath, so yeah I had to take a bath before I left for the hospital.

I was asleep!
I woke up at about 10am with a strong pain in my stomach and when i sat up my waters started leaking! They didn't go with a gush, just leak, leak, leak all day until my son was born at half past midnight!!!
The night before though I had lots of Braxton Hicks Contractions in quick succession. I was 38 weeks 5 days.

With #1, my water broke in the middle of the night. I did not feel anything prior to that. I was 41 weeks- overdue!!! Many women do not experience their bag of waters breaking before labor- the doctor usually will have to do it for you with this long plastic stick that looks like a knitting needle!

I have had three pregnancies and my water never broke with any of them. I was already at the hospital in the bed and ready to have the baby. The drs had to break it all three times. I worried everytime though that it was gonna happen right out in public somewhere. One of my friends water broke while sitting in her bosses office chair, rofl. And she never felt a thing before it happened.

My water broke at 38 weeks, I had NO idea, it was 1:00 in the morning, I went to the bathroom came back to bed and they broke! I ran back to the bathroom because I thought I was peeing on myself! No kidding! I never had contractions, we waited for 8 hours and then I had to have pitocin!
