If this is and IDE type drive, you can connect it to the same cable that is now connected to your "C" drive. If you look you will see that there are two taps on the cable. It is usually best to connect the "C" drive to the end tap, and the second or backup drive to the mid tap. You must make sure the the hard drive's jumpers are set correctly. The "C" drive must be set to "Master" or "Master with a slave" depending or the instruction that are written on the drive, and the second drive must be set to "Slave".
You do need to format this second drive, or Windows will not be able to see it.

Plug the IDE cable into the second drive; the main IDE cable attached to your mother board has 2 connectors, you are using one on the main drive.
Plug the second connector from the IDE cable into the second drive, plug in the power connector (assuming you have one spare), change the jumper on the second drive to be a slave etc (read the jumper guide on the drive to choose what is best for you but do not have it as primary master) and hey-presto you have a second drive.
Make sure your machine is turned off when you do this ;)

If its an IDE drive you have to make sure you abide by the master-slave rules. If you are going to run it on a cable with a Cd-Rom drive make sure you use an 80 ribbon cable. Most puters ship with a 40 ribbon cable serving the Rom drives and that wont work well with a hard drive. After you put it in and windows sees it format it. If you dont see it go into disk management and play with it there. (right-click on "my computer" left-click "manage" them left-click "disk management")

you need to set the jumper on the back of the hard drives one to slave and one to master with slave ....you need to put your operating system on the blank drive too.

I don't recommend using it internally. Go get an external case and hook it up via USB. Much more simple to deal with this way AND it's portable.

Well, just make sure you connect it correctly to the motherboard, and the power connection is good- and you should be good to go.
