I'm an Ohio State fan and I believe the hate comes from being No #1 or atleast in the top 3 every year. Everyone loves to hate No #1. But hey, the more they hate the more media attention Ohio State gets.
If you haven't been to OSU campus or a game at the Horseshoe, you have no idea why "The" was added to the university name.
Also, it's not OSU fault the BCS is screwed up. If your team was at an advantage of the BCS ranking you wouldn't complain. If it's a problem, contact the NCAA football league and complain.
As for the fans, yes we are obnoxious, crazy, etc.. But that's passion for the team, school spirit.

While there are good comments back and forth in many of these people's answers, I do have to take one answer to task.
In the list of the top 10 biggest sporting rivalries of all time the OSU v. Michigan rivalry is number one. More people tune in to watch than any other college football event in the nation (including the BCS).
Other than that, everything else is ok.

Jealousy, and I'm tired of hearing about the OSU fans! I mean, I've been a fan my whole life so just because 1 fan is an ignorant jerk that makes me one? You can't judge everyone for other people actions!

Because we hear about them all the time and they are not as good as everyone thinks. Last season they could not win a national championship (football, basketball) to save their lives. So people are tired of hearing about them. Puls we always have to hear about how OSU and Michigan is the #1 rivalry game. Let me tell you this my friend that is not so, what about Army/Navy, Florida/Georgia, Texas/Texas A&M, Florida St./Miami just to name a few. Rivalry games are much more then just how many fans watch the game. It is about tradition and spirit. Something it has been made clear OSU fans clearly lack. This answers your question!
stateofwoo-Oh, it is because you win so many games, well you could not win the big game when it mattered could you!
Nice answer Grundle! Sorry to hear about your yard.
poopykins81- Are you blind? If a majority of fans are classless jerks, then all OUS fans will be looked at as classless jerks. Of course all OSU fans are not jerks, but one bad apple spoils the bunch!

I don't know...I would like to know as well. I love OSU and a close friend of mine I work with is from Oklahoma and hates the Buckeyes. I ask her why and she just says she does (not a good enough reason, I think).

Success breeds contempt. Plain and simple.
Many will give answers that will always refer to last year's National Championship game. One team and its history does not get judged by one game. Was it terrible? Yes. Inexusable? Absolutely.
But is it what Ohio State represents? Or rather, does how they have performed this year and in a month in the National Championship game and learn from last year's game define who they really are more?

Its like opposite bandwagon, if a team does really good a lot of people will jump on them and be a "fan", If a team does really good for 2-3 three years then alot of people get sick of seeing them on top. and besides their from Ohio, and Ohio sucks.

I live in Columbus, and even work in affiliation with OSU, and the fans are simply the biggest pricks on the face of the Earth. If I was a sports fan I would most likely hate them too. A couple years ago I had pretty much my whole front yard demolished simply because OSU fans felt like being drunk assholes after a game.

because they don't have respect for football or their opponents, I respect our opponents fans until all they do is talk trash. I love OSU they are always the underdog no matter what, that is what makes them so great.
