can anyone tell me what alabama is known for?

Alabama grows a lot of cotton, NASA is in Huntsville along with a whole lot of other engineering firms, and Gulf Shores is beautiful. Lake Guntersville has some of the best fishing in the south.
It is also, unfortunately, known for race relationship problems and an intolerance for change.

Let's see. Great writers, for one. The list of Pulitzer winners from Alabama goes on and on. Truman Capote, Harper Lee, Walker Percy, Rick Bragg, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.
Huntsville is known for the Space Program. Birmingham is known for medicine, steel, and a really good music scene. The Gulf Coast is known for beautiful beaches and a laid-back atmosphere.
Scenic beauty. Kind people. Children with good manners. Neighbors and strangers who will not hesitate to help someone in need. A persistent belief that a well-lived life is far more important than just accumulating wealth. A belief that a person's soul is more important than his bank account.
Katydids at night in the summer. And fireflies. And gorgeous springs that last three unbeatable months until they melt into a lush, abundant summer that lasts into late October. A short fall that's spectacular nonetheless, and winters that are very rarely bitter.
Soft, lyrical accents of little old ladies. Butterbeans. The riot of yellow jasmine vines in a fence.
Bluegrass. Jazz. Rock. Country. All have important roots right here.
Crisp fall afternoons at football stadiums, where the students still wear coat and tie to the games. Summers at the lake or the river. And musicians almost everywhere you look.
Deep, rich, windless forests. Dark, nurturing soil. Town squares. Eccentric relatives. A notion that you are more than an individual, but a part of something larger. Abundant rain.

beautiful campgrounds, small town atmosphere, great schools (in most areas anyway), church, Alabama is not for everyone, most people here live a very simple life and want to keep it that way
