Just a nice story about a woman who's water broke at 20 weeks and she went on to have the baby only 10 days before her due date! Print this out and give it to your sister.

Your body continues to produce amniotic fluid even after the bag has broken, so long as they give her antibiotics, which they will, the baby will be fine.
Being born at 22 weeks is not a good thing, the lungs liver and nervous systems just arent developed enough for them to survive or thrive outside of the womb. In only a handful of cases the child has survived- but ive never heard of anything before 26 weeks.
SHe is in labor, and has been, anything that has to do with her cervix dilating and effacing, and water breaking is labor- they have her on medication to stop it, so long as her body doesnt buck the medication and go into labor on its own she'll be fine.
I am sure they are doing all they can, just encourage her to stay relaxed and help the baby.

Well it depends on how much of her water came out. The baby cant survive without it but we do produce it everyday. the big concern is that she is open for infection for the baby. so she does need to stay in bed. when my water broke i had to stay in bed for that reason. and with everything we have today there is a good chance that the baby can survive. but in a the water breaking is a sign of labor. that mean that the baby is ready to come out. i will keep her in my prayers

I had my daughter at 24 weeks.. I was in the hospital for 4 days before I had her and then she was in the hospital for 15 days before she passed away. At 24 weeks they give the babys a 50/50 chance. And there are babys who survive. I am so so sorry that she is on that position I know how it feels you really need to be there fore her and suport her because she is going to need you no matter what happenes. The March of Dimes has alot of really great information on there site. Please make sure that she gets the steroid shots for the babys lungs( its extremly important and so crutial for the baby ) The baby will make more amniotic fluid they always do. I will keep her in my thoughts..

Wow that's really scary I'm 22 wks pregnant and this is a big fear of mine. Because yes the baby can live outside the mothers womb at 22 wks. The baby will just be monitered very close. Starting at 22 wks to the end of pregnancy the baby is gaining weight. All the major changes are finished. I hope that your sister and her baby are ok.

I was just reading the other day that the youngest baby to survive was 21 weeks......there is a very slim chance of survival this early..I'm really sorry to say..and I wish it wasn't so. But ya, I don't understand how if water broke, baby won't be coming out soon? It was my understanding that when water broke, now babys not getting supplements anymore and is susepible to outside diseases etc. Oh, I sure hope all goes well!

the chances for a baby surviving at this age, though not un heard of us fairly uncommon I believe it is a rate of about 60%, water breaking does not mean she is in labor, a girlfriend of mines water broke at 24 weeks and she was on bedrest and IV antibiotics for 6 weeks and they could no longer hold the contractions at bay, I would tell her to stay as stress freee as possible put her faith in her God and the Dr takign care of her. Best of luck!
