Since cows are killed for their meat, not their hide, the meat industry is who you need to talk to. Horse people can make saddles out of lots of things- wool, synthetics (which suck by the way... that needs some re-thinking), brocade, etc.- and we likely will do so if the meat industry went south... it would spur better ways to make non-leather saddles that don't exist yet. But if they are killing the cows anyway, then better to not waste the leather and hide and let it rot. So focus on the MASS MEAT and COMMERCIAL FARMING problem, not little local farmers or people who use leather. Anyway, synthetics are made of petroleum products that are gushing into water sources worldwide, so when you have a solution for that I will worry about it (and participate!), but you can only focus on the biggest problems right now to be productive. Just my point of view. Can't get everyone all riled up over every single thing, you have to be productive. This type of thing will be solved by a trickle-down effect: you fix the big problem and all the little ones will sort themselves out because people are industrious, and *usually* compassionate. :-) Jesus Saves (really?): There won't be an overpopulation of something if people don't MASS breed it! And I do believe some people are more dangerous (manson family, Bundy, etc) than a wild cow and we don't put them to death. Read your friggin Bible, it says to be a steward of the creation, not dominate over it. Tired of 'christians' not getting their story right. Ashley: I agree. Well thought out answer. I wish we had a forum to discuss such things as ethics, morals, and compare the treatment of humans, habitat, and animals where the people discussing it weren't extremists.

You can ride cows. There is a fella around here that rides one in parades. They are rough. They are used for draft animals and can pull a longer slower pull than a horse. If you want you come to my place and I will put you on a cow. I think you will soon figure out the answer to your question

I've tried riding a cow and I can tell you it's uncomfortable because their rear end is slightly higher than the front end and they don't have any withers.
In addition cows are stubborn like hell and don't really like to be told to go anywhere they don't happen to want to go. I am sure with sufficient training that can be overcome, but it doesn't really seem to be worth while the effort if you have other options.
And they aren't as fast as horses.

I ride horses in the country side around Windsor Castle. I am very proude to have and ride a horse. My friends say i'm a horse of a man.
If on the other hand I rode cows around Windsor Castle i'd be laughed at and called bovine b***ard etc.

Thats why people ride horses.

You can ride a cow but its uncomfortable. Horses are also easier to train. Its better to use steers (castrated bulls) for pulling waggons, logs and such.

Cows are too slow and bulls too cantankerous. There's records of at least one mountain man that actually saddled and rode a buffalo.

Well horses are much stronger and faster and more robust. Cows have large trailing udders, weak legs, are fat and you would have to do the splits to sit on one.
