The Bureau of Labor Statistics studies the spending habits of all Americans, including the "middle class," and publishes the very exhaustive results of its Consumer Expenditure Surveys on at least an annual basis. The most recent survey for which full information is available is from 2005, and it breaks down consumer spending on everything from tobacco to eggs to housing to dairy products and movies.
