The people could represent aspects of yourself. Alternately, your dream may just be trying to tell you to appreciate what you have in life, (maybe you are not doing this at present for some reason) by way of comparison, by showing you that things could be a lot worse ~ this could also be why the dream showed you acquaintances in these situations & not close friends ~ if they were close friends going through these things you would be much more focused on your emotions about them...but as they were acquaintances ~ represents that these situations are not up close & personal, but is a general nudge to you, to appreciate what you do have in your life.
