If I am remember correctly from my AOL days, they use to use a "door slam" sound for when a Buddy logs off of your AIM. Go into the Preferences of the AIM, and see what sounds it is set to use. You should be able to confirm whether the "door slam" is the "Buddy leaves" event.

that noise is an im sound and buddy list sound, you can turn it off if you want, i like it as it tells me one of my buddies has left without having to look at the screen. dont listen to people who slag aol off, i have been with them for several years and have not had one bit of bother with them, i think they are very good and they have done me a better deal than any other provider

if you have friends on AOL instant messaging and they log off it makes a door slamming sound to let you know they have left.

If you have AOL instant messenger it is probably someone leaving (logging out) of AOL instant messenger.

if that didn't happen when you started it before you got AOL then you are so crewed
i would go to your local 'geek squad'

or computer fixer-upper
