Fake tree, I have allergies.
Lol, people saying fake trees are better for the environment though, are not thinking things through. What, do you think they are cutting Christmas trees out of the rain forest? They come from tree farms where they are grown for that purpose and a new one is planted in its place. They will decompose naturally when discarded, and their natural decomposition process will actually HELP break down other non-organic crap in the landfill. Fake trees will just sit there in the landfill when they're discarded, and most of them break within about 4 years or so anymore. You people are funny. Boycotting real trees for the environment is like boycotting lettuce. That must be some good hash, silly hippy.

This year will probably be our very first fake tree. We have a cat that has asthma, and the vet says that evergreens can be one of the things that triggers it. I'm not thrilled with the idea, but the rest of the family wants a tree of some sort, so we'll probably get a fake one.

If you have the money, invest in a good quality fake. Real trees are not flame retardant like fakes, the sap and/or water can get on your floor covering and stain it, crawling under a live tree to fill the water reservoir is a pain (the reason so many people don't do it!), and you'll be stepping on pine needles in your bare feet until at least August! Not to mention the environmental impact! Millions of live trees are cut down every winter, then wind up on the curb for pick-up every January. Some towns have programs for what to do with them, but others just take them to the landfills.
Fake trees provide jobs (people have to make them), they're cleaner, easier to vacuum up if they shed a little, won't stain your floor or catch fire, and can be used over and over! A lot more bang for your buck! Once you're ready to replace it, you can donate it to the poor who can't afford one, and they can use it over and over, too!
My last one was a really top quality tree. I got it on sale cause it was the display model, and it was gorgeous! Looked really real, and lasted 10 years before I decided to replace it. Over those 10 years, I would have shelled out probably 5 times as much on real trees as what that one cost me, and visitors to my home often asked how I found such a great tree (thinking it was real!). Fake trees don't have those infamous "bare spots" and other disfigurements you have to turn toward the wall and try to hide!
When I was done with it, I donated it to a charity that was collecting trees for the poor, so I'm sure it's still brightening the holidays for someone.
If you yearn for the smell of pine, you can use essential oil, potpourri, scented candles, etc. to get the smell without the mess. That's what I did!
I grew up with fake trees, then when I had kids of my own, I took them to a tree farm when they were little. We'd tromp through the fields and find our perfect tree, and cut it down ourselves, and ride on the wagon with it back up to the lot. We'd drink hot cider while waiting our turn to get it packaged for the trip home. We created memories that we all still cherish, and that was the most important thing. Isn't that what Christmas is really all about?
There're good reasons to get real trees, and good reasons to get fake. I vote for the practical reasons to get a fake tree, but you do what makes the most sense for your family and where you live! Merry Christmas!

Real! What's better then packing up spawn, driving out to nowhere in the snow and cutting down your own tree?
