okay so im doing a math project and i am supposed to be explaning a simple math problem to the teacher. i just need some help on finding a way to explain it clearly..
[2x+1]=5

2x+1=5 2x+1= -5
-1 -1 -1 -1

2x=4 2x=-6

\2 \2

X= 2 X= -3

Check:
2(2) +1=5 2(-3) +1=5
4+1= 5 -6+1=-5
5 = 5 -5 = -5

how do i explain each step clearly?

The absolute value signs mean: This, POSITIVE, equals 5. That means that the stuff inside could equal 5 or -5, because when made positive, both of those are 5. We must solve for this expression equaling 5 AND -5... there will be 2 answers.
THEN:
2 rules for solving for X:
You must UNDO everything that's being done to X, from the outside in....

Everything you do to on side of the equal sign, you do to the other side.

If two pregries and 1 make 5, two pregries by themselves make 4, so each pregrie is 2.

Or is this some kind of new mathematics, unknown to the rest of mankind?

Oh!! Why didn't you say that the square brackets were not square brackets but 'absolute' signs? Ask the wrong question, get the wrong answer.
