"Hispanic" is a somewhat fuzzy term describing ethnicity, and is generally applied to any person from a Spanish culture - Latin American, or Iberian Spanish, mostly. The word comes from the Spanish language name for Spain, "Hispania."
Since you asked about the Spanish people, you could use BOTH terms. In today's Spain, in which many immigrants from around the world - particularly North Africa - live and work, native Spaniards might wish to draw a distinction. But in general, Spaniards themselves are Europeans, and consider the term "Hispanic" ridiculous. The Southern Spanish city of Cadiz was founded by the Phoenician (the original name was "Gades") and is the oldest continually-occupied city in Europe.

Spanish first. European next. Hispanic doesn't apply at all. The term Hispanic is a blanket term applied to a person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American etc. heritage regardless of race.

Spaniards are European. Spain is in Europe.
Hispanic is a term that former President Nixon coined to mean what we now call Latinos. Latinos are people whose ancestors are from Latin American countries, not European. However, many of the people from Latin American countries are a mixture of Spanish and that specific Latin American country (Mexico, Central America, South America). Those Spaniards were all over the place making many conquests (land) with (physically) natives.
