In the words of Eddie Hitler,
"You're Born, you keep your head down, then you Die"
I am on the Science side of this, we are mere creatures that live for a while then cease to be.

Well you need to do something to occupy yourself for the duration don't you? What would you suggest, sitting in a nappy dribbling and crawling round on all fours like a baby for 80 years until your time is up and you die?? LOL :-)
No one makes you live or learn. Its part to human nature to want to be stimulated, to find out about our world, to learn, to discover and find things out. The experiences of life are what make life worth having. It all you do is sit and stare into space, there wouldn't be any point existing.
How do you know if we cease to exist when our body dies? Why do you think you need to understand the purpose of life? Why ask yourself about the purpose? Why not just enjoy the ride and see where life takes you?
I see life as a journey. You get on your mode of transport and set forth... you might have a destination in mind when you set off, but along the way things catch your eye, you stop and get off, explore, enjoy, learn have fun... get back on and travel a bit further.... the destination changes as you acquire more experiences and learn new things... where and when you end up at your destination remains a mystery.... but you just sit back and enjoy the journey. Certain things ARE within you control, yet some things never are and never will be. If something doesn't work for you change it if you can. But you have to accept certain universal laws and know that something just ARE and can't be changed. S**t happens. You have to accept that. You can still choose within the circumstances you find yourself. You can wallow in self-pity, woe-is-me or make a manure heap to fertilise your rose garden!!

Simply: the purpose of Life is existence.
Learning is to pass the information to the next generation that whatever you experienced through your existence
One thing we have to understand that except our eye, no other senses are having a cover (Eye Lid). Even this eye lid can protect light only to Some extent. All other senses are always open whether we are awaken or in sleep
So, whether it is day or night, even without our endeavour we receive and process in formations. The in formations received are also processed by our brain with / without our endeavour.
What all the above information indicates is that we are only a tool created by nature to pass the information to the next generation.
We are a part in the communication process of the nature
Purpose of Life is Existence.

It's hard to believe that life is simply a trial for the afterlife, for if that were so, why should there be children who die in infancy, or people who are born severely handicapped either physically or mentally? That's no fair trial for them.
What I do think is that, when you get to the end of your life and are looking back on it, you should know whether you have been happy with what you have done with it and experienced in it, and whether you have been the best person you could be. This is where heaven and hell lie.
Those I admire are those who left a trail of happiness in others behind them, who were the best they could be. Those I loathe are those who left a trail of hurt. I know which I want to be remembered as.

In the words of the Star Trek....."Its Life but not as we know it!"
My opinion which I gave to a similar Yahoo question is. The purpose of life is too find a reason and purpose to life. Your natural parents became friendly one day and by happy chance everything worked its little magic and then you were born.
They perfomed a biological function and satisfied a need.
You then have a choice either to make a miserable unhappy for yourself and those around or you can choose something positive. Your purpose is give a reason to life because without there is no reason to life, except what decide to give it.

Well, to me the purpose of life is the antonym (opposite) of life. To give something purpose, or meaning is to give it a definitive answer, something that cannot deviate, no matter the circumstances.
The purpose of life itself would have been defined in that moment life was created, and not something that we created, like saying that the purpose of life is money, because that it something we invented, and has no meaning to other life forms.
So the whole purpose is, effectively to die. That is the only guaranteed definitive attribute of life: it ends.
Maybe the purpose is for somebody to figure out the purpose, then we will know why we die, but most importantly why we live.
BRAIN BUSTER...

It's a hard one that. I am now retired and recently found my folder of certificates. I have so many, all of which I did to improve my career prospects. I was made redundant four times, so I suppose they did help me to get other jobs. However, I put in hours of study and now they are all completely worthless. I have so much knowledge and so many skills and the world is only benefiting from them in a very limited way. I watch younger people re-inventing the wheel and making many mistakes and all I can do is sit and watch.

Truly facing a purposeless, meaningless existence is frightening to say the least.
Purpose in life is a question that requires God otherwise the question itself is meaningless:
“Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” –Bertrand Russell
Russell was a noted 20th century mathematician, philosopher and Nobel Laureate. He was also an atheist but he was honest enough to understand that we live a purposeless existence if we are without God.
We have a hard choice. If we reject God, we also reject all real reasons for living and we are forced (in order to keep our sanity) to invent reasons and attach great importance to them.
If we don't reject God, then we should see that our great need for purpose must have been put into our human nature by God in order to point us to seek Him. So seeking God is our purpose.

We don't die, only the flesh, I have proof of this in that in three dreams dead friends have passed on messages that entailed me giving the info to the police. One was a murderers name and another a drug gang dealers name. Months later the criminals were caught and the names tallied.
I believe the soul lives and we continue to learn, able to return here if we wish to. We come to learn ,jealousy, poverty, humbleness, goodness etc, if we still don't get these by the time we die, we can return to try again. Once we are really good people, we can stay up there forever.
Also, if you have been evil as in Hitler, we return to being the good/pure soul we were before birth and would be then aware and devastated that we were an evil human being. Therefore Hitler, for instance, would be given another chance to return to try and relearn and be good this time....as a different person.

Why does life have to have a purpose in the first place, and why does the fact that any meaning you do give it not have value because it doesn't last forever?
How many people have told their spouses and children "I'd say I love you but won't because we'll all be dead some day so it doesn't matter?"
