"Exotic Zoology" by Willy Ley is the classic book on this subject, and ranges through a number of famous examples; with quite common sense explanations. It's a little dated now though, as it was first published in 1945 and republished in 1987. Another good book is "Mythical Monsters", by Charles Gould, written in 1989.

Instead of looking up cryptozoology try looking for "Bestiary."
Many of them will list and describe animals that fall into the new term of cryptozoology. They usually include odd mythologies of non existent animals. OR animals that do exist but are so odd that people can not see them accurately because the facts go so strongly against preconceived notions, eg., early descriptions of elephants stated they had 5 legs.

Actually, one pretty good source is http://www.cryptozoology.com/
In addition to forums and cryptozoological related news, they often have lists of good resources and references.
