everyone who answered Bush...boy you folks are naive and don't know history...just right off the bat: if he was there would be no Internet in the USA ...........like there is a heavily censored one in China and none in Zimbabwe.....
and most importantly, you would all have had your identities reported to the secret police and would be gone this afternoon......to a place that makes Guantanamo look like Sandals......
Mugabe is a good answer; Idi Amin did stuff that would make Hannibal Lector sick......Stalin is too close a contemporary to Hitler , but just as big a butcher
I'd nominate Mao Ts Tung.........not only did his forces slaughter millions in the 1947 civil war, but the Cultural Revolution and the Great Leap Forward saw 10 or 20 million....no one knows for sure..........and that was just yesterday, in the 60's; while people in San Fransisco were smoking dope and protesting Vietnam, people in China were being put in "re-education" camps as bad as Auschwitz.

Wow, the propensity of the other posters- with respect- to name any recent tin pot dictator as a 'great tyrant' really shows a poor sense of perspective.
Stalin's your man- even more calculating and paranoid than Hitler, probably killed more people, died in office, at the top of his game. Won the greatest war of all time after a disastrous start. Had a far greater control over his regime than Hitler ever did. Assassinated enemies near and far, and had a significant section of the Western intelligentsia singing his praises even as he was commiting genocide.
What a guy.

For the person who answered "there is no modern dictator in the world, it is a thing of the past" - please take a trip to North Korea, and IF you return, we will listen to your revised answer.
Nevermind Castro, Kim Jong-il is THE modern dictator.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - he rules through fear and hatred. He publicly expresses his hatred for Jews and Israel, he denies the existence of homosexuals in his country though it is known that his regime has executed many...there really are no other leaders at least of countries as civilized as Iran who have a leader who preaches violence and hatred as Mahmoud has. And the fact that he doesn't even try to hide any of it is what is the worst. Look up some of his quotes that include "Israel being destroyed in a great storm of fury" and countless others hinting at the destruction of Israel. And now it looks like they're going to go ahead and get a nuclear reactor...wow.
This question was also answered under the assumption that only current leaders are to be considered...of course Stalin is right up there with Hitler, and far, far worse than any current leader.

yah i agree with llord... stalin not only sided with hitler initially, he also killed another 20 million of his own countrymen during the purges, he wielded state security abd propoganda forces better than any, and constructed a state to which he did not have to answer, where as hitler was in alliance with big business interests, i also agree that some modern day leaders also use fear, propaganda and state security mechanisms to justify genocide.

Idi Amin- Because I have heard that this Idiot used to eat human beings, he used to store human heads in his fridge. He was so cruel that he tortured many people. He sent out Indians out of his country.

BUSH - is crazy and dangerous because does not work with intelligence but slogans - he is typically bigott, narrow-minded, ignorant - and so much power in such a so-called democracy is frightening - RICE is still much more dangerous - psycho-rigid
PUTIN is not a dictator - and his intelligence works normally - the progresses of his country are visible, nearly each day going - there is much visibility in his deeds and a vast majority of normal russians understand and support him- even if this makes some mo.ons upset
