In my spare time I am a beta tester for antivirus/antispyware software from all over the world.
Nortons is a hugh resource hog, I find that the program fails to find the majority of viruses, and the ones they find usually are not cleaned. Plus when you go to remove Nortons you are left with over 375 fragments glued to your registry keys, files, folders and hidden in your subsystem. It is a living hell trying to remove the fragments as they cause conflict.
For ten plues years I use what the Govt., Of China uses. Twister Trojan Antivirus. You only pay a one time fee for life of $29.99 and you get daily auto. updates and all new version for life. The technology is light years ahead of any other anitvirus program on the market. Never had one virus in my pc.
http://www.filseclab.com You can evaluate for thirty days with a key that will be given to you. After thirty days you will need to purchase and obtain your life time key.
I can assure you that you will not find any antiviurs company that does not charge you every year for updates and new versions.

If you like Norton ,renew it. The free ones like AVG and AVAST are very limited on protection, I personally like McAfee best and have done away with Norton. You can restore your sysytem and it will start your subscription over with Norton, But a restore may mean saving a lot of work to avoid losing it

Symantec is really ripping people off now. At one time I swore by them, not anymore. There are lots of FREE programs that work exceptonally well. One I'm using now is: Antivir Personal Edition Classic, its self updating and sure has protected my computer. Norton was popping up all the time. I'm tired of having to buy new software every year. I'm switching to Ubuntu too if I have anymore problems with Windows. Ubuntu is FREE too and I tried it on a friends PC and it's great. Doesn't gett all the attacks that Windows does and you can install it on as many PC's as you want.

Symantec tend to release a new version of their software every year, and which usually has one year subscription anyway. If you are going to stick with them, use their website to look at the products.
It is likely that you may get a few people slagging of Norton, this is mainly because it is better, and so needs more resources. If complaints about it are along the lines of slows your PC down, its because it is doing its job.

If you are happy with it just stick with it. if you want to go to the trouble of removing all the norton stuff and get a free virus guard try avg or avast.

It depends on what you want and need. There are free programs that don't have all of the features of the paid programs, but if it comes to push and shove use the one that does as much as you need it to, at the price you can afford.
Basic anti-virus programs usually do NOT have a firewall (if you use XP it should be activated) or anti-spyware controls so the paid features you can upgrade or add to them will cost you.
