Im not sure I know how to explain this one but i'll give it a try! Since it is an equilateral triangle all of its angles must be 60 degrees. (60+60+60=180). Now the altitude line divides the top 60 degree angle in half making it two 30 degree angles. So now if you focus on just one of the two triangles you will see that we are left with a 30-60-90 triangle. If you are familiar with the rules of a 30-60-90 then you will understand what i am saying. If not then it couldn't hurt to briefly look it up in order to make sense of this. The second londest line (the altitude) we know is 6 units long. Since it is a 30-60-90 we know if you multiply the length of the smallest side by the square root of 3 then you will end up with the lenght of the 2nd longest side (6). So we divide 6 by the square root of 3 to find the lenght of the shorter side which comes out to be 2 x square root of 3. Now since this is half the base of the triangle we simply multiply this by two to get the answer of 4 x square root 3 which is the base of the whole triangle.

Consider a triangle ABC where A = 30 degrees, B = 60 degrees and C = 90 degrees.
Then AB = 2, BC = 1 and AC = sq.rt 3
(This is the approach used to determine the exact value of some trigonometric functions).
Hence the ratios of the lengths of the side are:
AB:BC:AC or 2:1:sq.rt 3

If the angle above the 90 degrees is 30, and the angle to the right is 60 degrees, then:
-- the horizontal side is 1
-- the vertical side is root 3 (i.e. square root of 3)
-- the slanted side is 2

A = 30, B = 60, C = 90 in triangle ABC, then
a : b : c = 1 : sqrt(3) : 2 = 1 : 1.732 : 2
also from trigonometry,
a : b : c = sinA : sinB : sinC = sin30 : sin60 : sin90 = 1: rt3: 2

The hypotenuse opposite the right-angle (90deg.) is 2!
The side opposite the 30 deg. angle is 1 and the other side is Square Root of 3!
Thus the proportion is 1:2:root3

If we assume the base to be one unit, then the hypotenuse will be two units and the angle between these two lines will be 60 deg. The vertical line will be the square root of three.
